El ácido tuberculoesteárico es un ácido graso saturado producido por las bacterias Actinomycetales.[2] El nombre "ácido tuberculoesteárico" se acuñó porque se aisló por primera vez en 1927 de la bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
